Over the summer I worked on exploring and experimenting with composition and colour, sharing very little with others and trying to ride the ‘production wave’ to the max. Now that winter is around the corner I’ve slowed down and took this as an opportunity to reflect. I’ve finished over 20 new paintings, which look like an entirely new body of work. Most of it is abstract and is quite different to what I used to do a year ago.

Abstract Process
After years of painting I can confidently attest to the fact that producing art is a lot like being an athlete. It requires dedication, thorough technique, discipline and experimentation. Although its hard to say which component is more important, the experimenting part is definitely vital if you want to keep on growing.

The last year has been a lot about new beginnings. I’ve started teaching full time in September and I must admit that painting was pushed to the background a little. Although I’m constantly searching for new inspiration and ideas to channel into my work it has been quite challenging to keep both of my occupations equally productive.

Read MoreFrom Mind to Paper
What I do for a living is very strange. I spend hours creating semi abstract images on paper that reflect moments and feelings. Sometimes inspiration hits hard and I start getting ideas out of nowhere in my mind and the urge to put it on paper is a priority. The past few weeks where exactly that. I was so mesmerized by the blooming spring, although spring lasts about 15 minutes nowadays it was enough time to take it all in and produce fresh work.
For those of you who might be visit Saint Petersburg, you can pop into an amazing place called Demetra Art Hotel, aside from being a heritage building and a romantic getaway spot, they have my new collection hanging in their art gallery for display until August. Thank you guys!
Reflecting
Over the past year I’ve discovered for myself a new way of painting, which involves working on paper rather than canvas. I’ve grown found of it and developed a strong level of comfort doing so. Working on paper rather than canvas is somehow less fragile and there is an element of lightness to it and the results look more effortless.
I also realized that my work is both about thinking and feeling at the same time. Drawing is mostly thinking, where i plan the shapes out and overall composition. Colour is mostly intuitive and depends a lot on the mood and feelings of the moment. Learning to switch between thinking and feeling at the right time is a recipe for success!
Conceptually, I'm still very much drawn to various feminine images, incorporating fashion elements and trends into my recent series, creating a body of work with a unified aesthetic.
Special thanks to Sokos hotel in Saint Petersburg for showcasing my most recent works at your premises this weekend.

Art supply stores can be overwhelming and scary places. You end up buying things you don't really need and spending a fortune without noticing. Instead of showering you with endless options I decided to share my little 7 secret essentials I use on a daily basis to paint in oils. In my bag:

As a visual person as soon as I walk into a living space I can’t help but to notice the Art on the walls or the absence of it...and of course I start analysing the look and feel of everything around me rearranging and pulling it apart in my mind. You probably wonder what difference does all of it makes? and who cares really? but its not exactly so...whether consciously or not..we all do care.

Last week a wonderful team of kissedbylight featured a short and fun interview with me and a few shots of my most recent art works. In their NYC style like, beautiful loft of a studio, with magic light and enticing energy I revisited my past role of a model – which was ever so cool and uplifting. Fashion industry is where I worked for most of my early twenties, and had a chance to observe and learn from the most talented artist of our time.

I’ve had this post on hold for a while now because I’ve been having hard time wrapping my head around the direction my art has evolved in the past three months. For an artist who spent years deciphering the “how too" secrets of classical realism, to diverge into a more experimental and spontaneous direction was a big surprise, first of all for myself!
